Fire and Ice - The Winter War of Finland and Russia

The Winter War , fought in the winter of 1939/40 between Finland and Russia. It ended with the Moscow Peace Treaty, which maintained Finland's independence and ceded some Finnish territory to the Soviets. The conflict was significant because it brought to question the strength of the Red Army, which although numerous was relatively weak compared to the Finns, and the Western Allies, who did little to help the Finns.

Some notable facts from the documentary:
  • It was one of the coldest winters ever with temperatures dipping to -40degreesc.
  • The Russians had 3 times as many soldiers as the Finns and also 100 times more tanks and 30 times more aircraft (Wikipedia)
  • The Finns had winter camaflauge and used skis while the Russians had red uniforms and tanks.
  • The Finns had a diet with high fat and protein and called it "The Saussage War"; but Russians had a poor diet.
  • A Russian batallion had a chance to win the conflict, but the soldiers smelled saussage soup cooking in the Finn's field kitchens so they stopped fighting, ignored their superiors,
and went for the soup giving the Finn's a chance to regroup.
